HEALTHY QUIET TIME (HQT) Applied Mindfulness and Mindful Meditation through Self Hypnosis

HQT is a practical ten-week group taught Mindfulness Course. It differs from other training formats in two ways. First, HQT lets you have the experience, with context, from the very start instead of tedious lessons and explanations. It’s very much like teaching a musical instrument by having you first play favorite songs instead of meaningless notes or scales. Also, HQT is inspired by nearly 15 years of clinical hypnosis practice which quickly puts proven self-help modalities into your daily life.

Healthy Quiet Time began as an elective in a public alternative middle school taught over a complete school term. As a consulting hypnotist, I was asked to develop a lesson plan to cover eight 45-minute class periods. The focus was to prepare young teenagers mentally/emotionally for high school, college, and beyond. The course addressed adolescent issues from physical/emotional maturing, schoolwork, and relationships. Seeing active teens responding to the meditation portion was stunning, especially during their active school days. Its popularity grew through word-of-mouth as students signed up to capacity each term for the next seven years. Both faculty members & parents attended several of the sessions. This positive feedback prompted me to adapt the program for us adults and the challenges we face. Among some of the minor changes, I added a few ways to incorporate meditation into our busy schedules. As for any age group, I have designed HQT to be easy, fun, and effective.

The HQT course begins with an overview of the health benefits and self-help possibilities derived by merely closing your eyes a few minutes every day. Each lesson includes a brief discussion of that day’s theme, followed by a group relaxation where you will experience phenomena only once known after years of meditation practice. This is possible by combining ancient meditation and modern hypnosis techniques. The lessons build on each other, so that at the end of the ten weeks, you will know yourself in ways you never imagined. You’ll be able to manage your moods & behavior and have the ability to anticipate situations before they can affect you.

There are many Mindful Meditation training programs and Apps out there. Unfortunately, they are loaded with rules, tedious procedures, caveats, and counter-productive language. They lead us to believe that meditation needs to be perfect with perfect conditions. HQT embraces imperfections, noises, changes, and busy schedules rather than try to correct them. What were once considered distractions will now become welcome additions to a positive experience. It is more useful and fun to recognize that every day, every session, will be different. Being flexible, forgiving, and accepting that some days are simply better than others is the essence of this program.

Below is the course outline. As each day builds on the last, it also reviews what has already been learned. So, if you miss a session, you are still able to fully absorb the current theme. There were many occasions during the middle school course when vacations and holidays caused breaks in the learning but had little effect on the overall outcome. You’ll see from the very first class how subsequent sessions will only add insight and tools.

  2. Beginning a conversation with yourself, becoming your own coach, cheerleader, audience, “North Star.”
